Convict to be extradited to US

February 08, 2023

A man who absconded bail in the US before he was to be sentenced for drug and firearm offences, consented to an extradition request yesterday in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court.

Devon Anthony Bennett is to be extradited to the state of California, where he was held with heroin and an illegal firearm. He was arrested, charged and taken to court but failed to attend his sentencing hearing. He was then located in Jamaica. The requesting state is represented by Jeremy Taylor K.C.

Bennett, who had no legal representation, waived his rights to an extradition hearing and, under the watchful eyes of Senior Parish Judge Lori-Anne Cole-Montaque, signed the documents, giving his consent to be extradited.

"I would like to go back to the United States," he indicated to the court. The judge then signed the warrant of committal to formalise the proceedings.

Bennett was remanded in custody pending his extradition.
